Community-based Learning projects

Community based learning projects are a new approach in teaching. They maximize the role of the school and give it a valuable role that it plays in the community as a whole. This approach shows that schools affect and are affected by the surrounding community. Teachers have a great role in guiding and monitoring their students while carrying out a CBL. Later on they will be trained to do CBLs on their own.
What I have noticed and caused the “aha” moment for me is that CBLs need a lot of preparation and co-operation much patience especially when it is a new approach for the learning community.
I have decided to discuss this new approach with my colleagues and try to clarify the impact of the CBLs on teachers, students and the community as well. CBLs help students build positive interaction, create mutual understanding, raise students’ feeling of responsibility towards their community, train them for problem-solving approach in the future, voice their feelings and opinions, push them forward to be leader and self-dependent. In fact CBLs’ benefits are countless. I can carry more than one CBL at the same time because there is great flexibility in forming the CBL group.

  1. Interesting observation, but I encourage you to find out more about project based learning (PBL) and Community Based Learning before you try to implement either or these techniques.
